Singing for Pleasure

Man

The Penyard Singers will welcome more singers in all sections, but particularly men. It is a sad fact that most amateur choirs are now suffering from a shortage of men. There is no physiological or intellectual reason for this as, statistically, there are as many capable male voice singers as female out there.

Suggested reasons for the decline are: a lack of encouragement at the formative age in schools, the ‘non-macho’ image of choir singing (we don’t sing with the girls - we prefer a guitar and a microphone), football on television, and the desire to slump down  and relax after a day out at work.

With the last reason in mind, all choir singers agree that working together to make glorious music one evening a week is a wonderful experience and a tremendous therapy for the rigours of life. The pleasure of working collectively on something else is in itself relaxing. And the achievement of performance is very rewarding.

Gentlemen, please come to a rehearsal and give us a try. It is not essential that you are able to read musical notation. The only requirements are a voice and the ability to sing in tune. If you can speak, you have a voice and, although you might disagree, it is most likely that you can sing in tune.

As can be seen from the list of our past concerts, we do not confine ourselves to classical music. We sing everything from baroque to pop and we enjoy doing it. If you have a question about us that is not answered on another page, please email or call one of our committee on our contacts page.

We look forward to seeing you!
